Instruction and Assessment

CREATIVE OUTLOOK

As an educator, it is first my responsibility to assess prior knowledge and skills.  Having a creative outlet allows students to excel in the following areas of education:

Critical thinking                                  Reflection

Creative thinking                                Collaboration

Problem solving                                  Time management

Art is a visual language that develops visual thinking strategies which makes it essential to learning.  Students learn by becoming interested and engaged in every creative process.  Art encourages hand/eye coordination as well as other brain building techniques.  These transferrable skills will be used in students everyday lives.  Students will comprehend, create, and reflect on their work in art to make sure they are reaching their fullest potential.

CHOICE

Choice allows students to become engaged in art projects, while at the same time providing differentiation.  Choices can be anything from subject matter to materials.  Choice gives students opportunities to create unique works while still applying the appropriate standards.

UNDERSTAND, KNOW, DO

Art instruction directly relates towards getting students to understand, know, and do.

Understand: relationship and concepts---laws, rules, cause and effect, relationships, local and global perspectives

Know: art content---materials/techniques, inherent characteristics and expressive features (cultural traditions, movements, history, color systems and forms of line)

Do: process &skills---planning and ideation, artistic problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, reflecting, and critiquing

FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Through formative, summative, and authentic assessments, teachers can determine the level of learning for each student.  Assessments should be directed by the teacher but completed by students.  Assessment is directly related to instruction and does not interfere with the course objectives and standards.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT measures student learning and how well the material was taught and ultimately gages areas the teacher may need to reteach for understanding of content.  Final critiques, final portfolios, art shows and exhibitions along with reflections are all ways to assess students ultimate learning of the unit and or class learning targets.
